Exclusive: Magic The Gathering’s Marvel Set Just Added Another Fantastic Commander
Not only are we less than three weeks away from the release of Magic: The Gathering's Marvel Super Heroes set, we're also exactly a month out from U.S. Independence Day, making GameSpot's exclusive MTG card reveal all the more appropriate. If you'd like to get your hands on the set, check out our Magic: The Gathering Marvel preorder guide. To help celebrate the lead up to this super hero-sized set, Wizards of the Coast offered us a first look at Captain America, Wings of Freedom. Below is the card as it appears in the main set, as well as its Logo variant, which can be found in both Play and Collector booster packs. Template_GroupedStyles Template_GroupedStyles Though I had little doubt Marvel Super Heroes would add plenty of great commander options thanks to the vast pool of powerful characters it pulls from, I'm still really excited by Captain America, Wings of Freedom. Flying, first strike, and ward offer the card some resilience and protection, which is much-needed considering its low defense. Captain America, Wings of Freedom's main ability–which sees all other Hero cards you control to get +X/+X until end of turn where X is equal to Captain America's toughness–is perfectly suited for helming a white deck with a win condition focus on swinging wide with an army of buffed-up tokens. This Legendary Creature – Human Soldier Hero card hits a real sweet spot for me; it's not particularly expensive, it doesn't feel egregiously overpowered, and it seems like it will be a lot of fun to build around. In short, this is a well-balanced card that seems ripe for the Commander format. It also seems like a solid draft pull, as there are sure to be a ton of Hero creatures in Marvel Super Heroes that will benefit from his temporary buff. Though we’ve seen a few Captain America cards join the Magic The Gathering roster, few have depicted Sam Wilson, the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s current Captain America. In the MCU, Wilson took up the mantle following Steve Roger’s—and Chris Evan’s—departure. Portrayed by Anthony Mackie, Sam Wilson led 2025’s Captain America: Brave New World. As for what else you can expect from Magic The Gathering’s upcoming Marvel set, long-time designer Mark Rosewater said there will be “over 600 mechanically unique cards.” These cards come feature a slew of both new and returning mechanics, all of which we cover in our Marvel Super Heroes mechanics guide.
